The official visit of Prof. Eden Mamut, BSUN Secretary General to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople

On February 14^th, 2023, Prof. Eden Mamut, Secretary General of the Black Sea Universities Network (BSUN), paid an official visit to The Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople where he had a meeting with His All Holiness Bartholomew I, The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople.

During the meeting, Prof. Mamut presented the Black Sea Universities Network, the activities developed within the Network and the current concerns of the Academic Community from the member universities. Also, there were presented the activities initiated by BSUN in the context of the situation created by the military conflict from Ukraine, of the consequences on the civil population and especially on the children and students from the universities, as well as from the pre-university institutions.

Also, there were presented the concerns and the preoccupation related to the catastrophic consequences of the military operations resulting in casualties among the civil population, destruction of infrastructures, buildings, hospitals, schools and an unprecedented habitat degradation. It was underlined that even in the situation in which, an immediate cessation of war would be reached, the impact on the environment that has been done to the moment, shall affect the population from the Black Sea region for many decades from now on.

His All Holiness, Patriarch Bartholomew, presented the initiatives and actions that have been taken by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in the framework of collaborations with various other international institutions, but also the positions expressed by His Holiness with a view to the immediate cessation of hostilities and starting negotiations.

During the discussions, it was agreed to initiate cooperation through mutual information and support of the initiatives of the two parties in order to promote dialogue and protect the environment and human security in all aspects.

The meeting was also attended by Prof. Nikolaos Theodossiou, President of SDSN Black Sea.
