The visit of Mr. Matthew Viljoen, Operations Manager of EGI to Constanta |

On February 13th, 2020, Mr. Matthew Viljoen, Operations Manager of EGI visited Constanta and had meetings at “Ovidius” University of Constanta (OUC), National Research Institute “Grigore Antipa” and Black Sea Universities Network International Permanent Secretariat (BSUN IPS).
Mr. Viljoen had meetings with Rector Sorin Rugină at OUC and discussed about the possibilities for cooperation with the EGI. OUC is member of the National Grid Infrastructure – NGI, coordinated by the Institute of Physics and Nuclear Engineering “Horia Hulubei”, that is a member of EGI. There were presented the plans for extending the infrastructure of OUC with a new data center and opportunities to develop projects and services related to the main sectors from the region, as modelling and simulation works in the coastal area, smart city applications, ecosystem services and knowledge based platforms for ecosystems in terms of water management, renewable energy, fishing and oil and gas off-shore exploitations.
Mr. Viljoen also visited the National Center for the Oceanographic Data and the COSMOMAR Center for Space Technologies that are hosted by the National Institute “Grigore Antipa”. During the meeting with Dr. Simion Nicolaev, General Manager of the Institute and Dr. Tania Zaharia, Scientific Manager, there were evaluated the needs and the perspectives in the field of data management on various aspects of the coastal environment and integrated coastal management.
The visit to the BSUN IPS was in the format of a workshop where Mr. Matthew Viljoen presented the services, dedicated platforms and different applications that have been developed within EGI and with the different partnerships that EGI is developing. The team led by Prof. Eden Mamut, BSUN Secretary General, presented the current priorities and projects that are developed under the frame of BSUN. There were evaluated the possibilities of cooperation for organizing summer schools, training sessions and demonstration activities, to the benefit of BSUN member universities.
